For those who like more leisurely pursuits, there are selected walks and cycle routes close to the Park. For the more adventurous the rugged Cheviot and Simonside Hills give breathtaking scenery and the chance to see rare and interesting wildlife.
The historic castles and wide beaches of the Northumberland coast are not to be missed. Take a trip to Holy Island or visit picturesque fishing villages like Craster and Seahouses where you can take boat trips to the Farne Islands.
Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall, a World Heritage site and the new 84 mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, with its Roman Forts and fascinating museums.
A great day out can be had at one of the many National Trust properties you can find dotted around the area. These include Wallington Hall and Cragside House.
Northumberland is rich in history, with an array of castles and abbeys to visit.
Alnwick Castle, only a short distance away, is renowned for its fabulous Water Garden featuring the dramatic Grand Cascade, beautiful scented Rose Garden and European inspired Ornamental Garden and your children can see where ‘Harry Potter’ went to school and learned to fly his infamous Nimbus 2000.
For the more adventurous, the holiday kingdom of Northumberland beckons, with Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Hadrians Wall, Seahouses and the Farne Islands all within about half an hour’s drive from the park. To the west, the Cheviot Hills provide wonderful walking and a train from Morpeth Newcastle is 20m & Morpeth to Edinburgh takes 1hr 20m.
Northumberland is a shoppers paradise, with the bustling City of Newcastle and the Metro Centre close by. Not to mention Sanderson Arcade in the historic town of Morpeth, the Royal Quays in North Shields and the Silverlink in South Shields. From designer shops and big brands to independent boutiques and hand made treasures, there is something to suit all tastes! Be sure to bring your pennies!
For those interested in sporting activities, there is plenty to keep you entertained here. With not one, but two, 18 hole golf courses at nearby Linden Hall, inland watersports at Kielder Water or Woodhorn and good fishing on Kielder Water, Fontburn Reservoir or South Linden Fishery, there is something for everyone. For more general sporting pursuits, be sure to visit The Willowburn Leisure Centre in Alnwick or Morpeths Riverside Leisure Centre, which both have excellent facilities and a new leisure centre & spa has opened in Ashington.
Lovers of the coast will be spoilt for choice using Forget Me Not as a base. Northumberland has a host of beautiful beaches, which are just a short drive away from the park. Get out and explore the beaches in Alnmouth, Druridge Bay, Newbiggin by the Sea, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth and Bamburgh. Bucket and spade optional!
