What to do in the area?

The site at Egglestone Abbey is managed by English Heritage and has a large car park and no admission charge. The charming ruins of the Abbey sit picturesquely above a bend in the River Tees near Barnard Castle. The remains include much of the 13th Century church and a range of living quarters, with traces of their ingenious drainage system. The Abbey of St Mary and St John the Baptist was founded at Egglestone between 1195 and 1198. An explorers dream and an ideal spot for a picnic.

Only a short car journey away from Hurworth Springs Country Park is the small vibrant market town of Darlington which is steeped in history and has been named one of the top ten places to live in the UK. Home to one of the oldest indoor markets in the country, the historical Victorian building that has served the town for over 150 years sits proudly on the high street among a variety of local traders, boutiques and national household names such as House of Fraser and Topshop. Definitely worth a day trip.

Family Activites

Imagine stepping back in time to Victorian Darlington, the town that became known as the birthplace of the Railways. The Darlington Railway Museum is located in North Road Station on the 1825 route of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first steam-worked public railway. Discover the booking office with its original Victorian interior, the platform that still has its original footbridge, waiting room, newspaper kiosk and Victorian toilets. Take a journey through time, a day out for all the family.

Atlantic grey seals, cheeky red squirrels or shy deer, there’s plenty of wildlife to be found right here in the North East. With over 2,200 fluffy seal pups born on the Farnes in 2016 the seal population is booming. We have Red Kites at Gateahead, the Puffins have made the Farne Islands their home, the Salmon are swimming up river on the River Tyne, there are Otters in Tyne Valley, Ospreys at Kielder Forest and Roe Deer at Cragside, if you tread quietly and carefully you might just catch a glimpse of these beautiful mammals. Binoculars to the ready.
